Hey everyone, I'd like to hear your thoughts on a ... pretty odd topic - HOW can I keep a pet once getting into the consulting / road warrior lifestyle (traveling 80% of the time)? Perhaps finding a rommie who has a pet?
I don't have one at the moment but really wanna get a kitty cat :)

To be honest, you really can't do it. You could probably pull off a cat if you were in banking, but even then, only after a couple years. Not fair to the kitty if it's all alone all the time.

Disagree with theking. When I'm traveling during the week I keep my sex slave in a cage with a jar of peanut butter and jug of water, works fine for us.
Finding a roommate would essentially be your only option.
I have a cat and a dog. The dog goes to a friend during the week. The cat hangs out at home and I alternate friends/family checking in on it once a week. Yes, the cat does get lonely during the week. However, it does survive and is then far more loving Thursday night->Monday morning than it used to be. It's not ideal, but the cat seems happy overall.
I know another consultant that had two cats that she was far more concerned for. If I remember right, she had hired a service to check in on them and play with them for 30 minutes or an hour every day. It's expensive, but pets are pretty awesome.
You (and the other consultant) sound like selfish assholes. I have a cat but at least I'm home to see him every day and I don't need to pay a service to act as a surrogate.
Despicable human being, if you worked for me I would fire your ass so you can spend more time with your neglected pets.
You can definitely have a pet as a consultant, as long as you're OK with replacing it every weekend once you get staffed on a travel case.
I knew a guy who showed up with his little dog to the Sheraton every week.
Sorry to revive an old thread, but wanted to hear others opinions. I travel Mon - Thurs every week, but my significant other is working locally. (Out of the house by 8AM, back home by 7PM every night) Would having a puppy be a bad and irresponsible thing? We have lots of friends who have been dog owners for a long time, and while some think that it'd be irresponsible for us to get a puppy with this sort of lifestyles, some other friends pull this off, without sacrificing too much social life. What do you think?
Its going to initially be hard to train the puppy with those hours. I got a dog early in my career when I was switching jobs and took 6 weeks off in between gigs. I didn't really time my jobs up just to get a dog but it really helped in the training phase that I was with him for a large amount of my day during the first month or so and was able to train him. I still walked into the house to my fair share of shits and pisses but it wasn't that bad. The dog is now 5 and my hours are pretty much 7a-7p and its been pretty accident free for the last few years. It kind of sucks for the dog to be home that long but I think he has a pretty good life otherwise.
I would find a roomie with a pet. Makes you feel less bad for not spending time with it and you don't have to take responsibility for it.
My roommate has a dog, travels Mon-Thurs, and boards his dog. I'm in banking and am usually home nearly every week, but I told my roommate clearly before we moved in together, that if he wanted a roommate to look after his dog, I was not the right person for him. I work long hours, don't really like big dogs (which his is), and often go to my SOs place directly after work.
Unless you have an agreement with you SO or roommate, you are going to have to board your dog, and honestly, all three of those things are pretty shitty. You are either inconveniencing somebody else with your major responsibility, or you are putting your dog in a likely stressful situation week in and week out. I flatly believe you should wait until you flip to a more stable (travel wise) job, or never get one if you are doing consulting long term. There are trade offs to that type of career, and the only way to get everything that you want is to be very selfish.
Not sure I recommend it, but I have a buddy who got his dog an emotional support designation while he clearly doesn't need her for emotional support.
He brings her on flights and she sits under his legs, and most hotels don't care to do anything about it.
It's a risk but if you want a cat or dog that may be a way around it.
Also if you bring your cat to a hotel let me know so I can avoid it all costs since I'm allergic to those fuckers.

Unfair to the pet - put your time in, get a job in industry, and then get a pet.
This thread really backs up my belief that pet owners have a pretty tentative grasp of reality

Although I don't travel for work, I still work longer hours than I feel comfortable with in terms of owning a pet. I would love to get a dog but it's just not fair to the dog to be in a cage for 10-14 hours/day. The solution I came up with is that I volunteer at an animal shelter as a dog walker/runner and am responsible for play time with 1-2 dogs every Saturday morning. Pros of this greatly outweigh the pros of pet ownership for people who aren't home often - you don't have to feel guilty for leaving the animals in a cage or home alone, you basically get unlimited access to ~50-100 animals, and you don't have the cost or burden of owning a pet. I would highly suggest everyone look into this. The only downside is that most shelters require a weekly commitment in order to keep consistency with the animals.
