Space Travel and Tourism - A Space Odyssey to Mars and Beyond!

NASA did extraordinary things back in 1969 by putting a Man on the Moon. Now, the torch bearer has been passed to private industry with SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic.

Spacex

The topic of Space isn't a new one as man have been looking and pondering about the Heavens for eons. In Science Fiction, the tales of space has been explored by folks like Gene Roddenberry, George Lucas, and Arthur C. Clarke to name a few. This discussion isn't necessary about fellow Apes being Star Wars or Star Trek fans but more about your own take on Space and where this market is going next.

The immediate focus is on scaling and sending things to space very economically and SpaceX has been making significant progress on this front. A little ways away, Elon Musk and others want to send all of us to Mars and hopefully reside there permanently one day on that Red Planet to leave our Blue Planet behind.

Martian

  1. What are your thoughts about Space from a realistic and Sci-fi perspective?
  2. Who's on the bandwagon for Mars and beyond and who of you feel that home will always be here on Earth?
  3. How much money is in this market and how would you make a market for the Industry of Space?

Unfortunately, our government seems to no longer be in the business of sending people into space on its own rockets, leaving manned scientific missions in space at the mercy of the Russians and private companies. That being said, I think that commercial space travel is an exciting frontier, but very risky for investors. The potential for failure is enormous, and capital expenditures are I'm sure enormous.

Right where SpaceX is. To build bases, space stations, etc, you need to transport goods. If you can do that cheaper by reusing rockets, then you have an advantage.

I find it to be super exciting. I think the advances necessary for us to populate mars are going to be unachieveablr within our lifetime. I doubt I would ever make another planet home, but I would definitely consider a vacation. And honestly, I think vacationing on the moon would be just as fun.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Very relevant post considering the timing of this sick discovery: NASA's Big Announcement: 7 Earth-Like Planets Orbit One Nearby Star

Summary of main points (correct me if I'm wrong): By October 2018, the James Webb Space Telescope will release. It will be able to detect gasses imperative to life as we know it (oxygen and stuff). If we do see those gasses in the atmosphere of said planets, it's quite likely that there is indeed life there.

This country seems to be focused on minutia instead of our collective greatness. We need to focus on advancing humanity instead of trivial bullshit that this country and others seems to focus on. Going to the moon rallied this country (and the USSR) in a way we haven't seen in recent years. The fact that the USA got out of the rocket business is very sad. I love Musk and the fact that he is reducing the cost of rockets, but sometimes things aren't economical and that is where the government comes in. Not sure if going to Mars has a ROI, but as a society it elevates us.

Personally, I would love to see the President (not just Trump, but any President) announce a nationwide "mission" every 5 years. Whether it is curing a specific disease, building some massive project that benefits us all, solving some unsolvable question or going to another planet. I think the goal and pride in achieving it will bring us all together.

Just look at AIDS/HIV. An impassioned community got behind a mission, got donations and political support and in has seen a steady progression of treatments, research advancements and almost a cure. Imagine if we got behind other things with this kind of passion, dedication and excitement.

People remember the Pyramids. They don't remember the people hauling the blocks. Advancing our society should be the primary goal.

@TNA",

+1SB, On point.

I read an article in the SouthWest airlines magazine by Stephen Sandford, ex NASA engineer, who wrote Gravity Well: America's next, Great Frontier. The article was awesome and got me thinking about Space again.

He has a blog and I read the Mission Statement which resonated and expands upon your thesis above: http://www.thegravitywell.org/the-mission/

For anyone who is remotely interested in the Arena of Space, the Gravity Well blog is a pretty interesting read. I'm going to get the book for a read once I get home from my Porsche 911 buying trip. :)

I tend to think we'll get one person on mars, just for the sake of saying we did it, then manned missions will take a back seat to robotics focused on mining/collecting whatever can be reasonably brought home and sold. My opinion also has no scientific basis, so it could be a long time off that the profit from bringing something back from space is greater than the cost of going to get it.
