What are people's reaction when you tell them you work in a Hedge Fund?

When ever someone asks me what I want to do after a school I reply with working in a Hedge Fund. I get about 3 responses

a. What the fuck is a Hedge Fund?

  • I then tell them and they look at me like I'm some sicko and say how boring

b. Your a money hungry bastard!

I wanna hear what responses you guys in Hedge Funds get when you tell people what you do?

Not at a HF but usually it goes something like this

Victoria's Secret Model #1: "So what do you do for a living?" Me: "Well I work in finance, specifically, Asset Management" Victoria's Secret Model #2: "You can manage my assets any time you'd like" Victoria's Secret Model #1: "Is your fund LONG only?"

I'd say that this exactly situation unfolds 90-95% of the time, every I ever bring up my job to anybody at any location.

Be honest with me here. Have you spoken to any Victoria's secret models? If you have.... thank you for solidifying my resolution to join the industry

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

What a shitpost.

The only people who ask you what you do in life are girls and potential employers. The girls don't really care as long as you make money and the employers already know what a hedge fund is. You are not going to be walking through hipsterdom telling everyone you work for a hedge fund just so they can yell at you with the improper use of "your" and beat you over the head with their "Feel the Bern" signs.

Something to remember is that half of your highschool class (at least) will end up as fat losers. Their opinions shouldn't matter to you. Don't be a tool saying "I want to work for a hedge fund" but it's hardly a bad thing to have goals. Highschool seems like it's the most important thing when you're there, but it's not anywhere close.

Man when i was in high school everybody was working part time jobs at mcdonalds flipping burgers (or something similar). Good for you that you've been given the opportunity to work at a hedge fund.

Anyway on topic: 1) $$$$ - hf's shitting out money 2) day-trading or some variation of it - i'd assume they envision a bunch of guys staring at screens waiting for a stock to pop

one of the most successful dragon slayers I've ever met used to just make up ridiculous jobs. inevitably it'd just spark more conversation.

- zookeeper
- commercial fisherman
- manager of a sex store
- head of fisheries at parks department
- landscaping artistry
- water aerobics instructor

the list goes on

I'm going to have to try the 3rd from top sometime soon.

They call me a liar, and they're right.

When a plumber from Hoboken tells you he has a good feeling about a reverse iron condor spread on the Japanese Yen, you really have no choice. If you don’t do it to him, somebody else surely will. -Eddie B.

Someone had already mentioned this, but don't you love it when you go out to a bar/social event and you meet a girl who asks you specific details of your job right off the bat as if that's the determining factor if she's going to continue talking to you or not.

Just LOVE it when girls questions if you're in IBD? when you say you're in finance. Subsequently asks which group within IBD?
