Pension fund to HF?

The typical path to get to a large HF is working the first 2-3 years at an IB. But can you get there without the sell-side experience by working at a pension or mutual fund? Asking as a Canadian HS senior considering different aspects of different uni programs. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Is breaking into a top mutual fund easier or more difficult than securing a position in a comparable investment bank?
