Switch from Equity to Fixed Income?

I'm in equities and I may have an opportunity to switch to fixed income (high yield). I'm not that deep into my career so the opportunity cost of switching is not too bad.

How hard is it to switch. My firm does both equity and fixed income and when I read the fixed income research, I understand the fundamental parts (sector, business model, business drivers, etc.) but I'm lost when it gets to valuation, positioning, market technicals, etc. I don't know the jargon and math and it's not intuitive. I tend to like what I'm good at and I don't understand this space and fear I won't be good at it.

Is it possible to switch and do well or did I miss the boat without starting out in credit? What do I need to do to get up to speed on fixed income? I can read primers, books, etc., but will that be enough to get started? Seems like I may need to take some math classes too.
