Advice on IB to Consulting Jump
Hey all,
Quick summary of my situation- currently a junior at an ivy with an upcoming IB SA at a BB in NY. Last spring, IB recruiting snuck up on me, and I panicked / decided to sign in March for a 2023 SA thinking banking is probably the best overall starting point for a successful career. This past May I helped a few friends interview prep for some MBB gigs and while helping them, I found myself overwhelmingly more interested in the content of what consulting consisted of versus IB. In addition, I absolutely hate NYC, but I thought it was the safest launch pad for my career (call me an idiot or soft for not thinking it through / being conservative, I get it). Also had some personal family things come up which made me realize the extra comp in banking isn't worth what I would be sacrificing.
Fast forward- I have come to the conclusion I want to try recruiting for FT at MBB in a different city where my family is moving. But I have a handful of questions that I have no idea who to ask...
- I understand that networking for consulting isn't really a thing like it is for IB, but given that I am trying to get to a city where I have no connections (or alumni there), no consulting experience, and an upcoming IB SA appearing on my resume, I imagine reaching out via email and hopping on the phone with someone where I could articulate a much better explanation would help? Do you guys think this would be a terrible idea to do this early or good to get a jump on it?
- If this isn't the best way to go about it, please let me know what you guys think, regardless of how difficult it may be. I'll work my ass off to make it happen, I just need to know what is the best way to do it.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far.
