Can I do consulting for local small companies?

I’m a highschool junior who is desperately trying to get into a top undergrad business school, was given the idea of doing consulting for small businesses to help them tackle simple problems they might come across. Does this seem reasonable? What should I know/ how should I educate myself on the industry before attempting this? Would this just be a waste of time? Just looking for others thoughts.
