They're both good, pay the same, and have mostly similar office locations. Strat is <200 people, BA is 4000. Strat is more PPT, BA is more excel/BI (but not as much as data analyst).

Cap1 has a BA internship at least. Unsure on strat but I think so. I was contacted by a recruiter, but it's also available on their website.

Did any of y’all get a confirmation email that says like “Thanks for applying”? I didn’t get anything like that and I’m wondering if there was error on my part.

Highly recommend the BA/SA programs. I'm finishing up my BA summer there right now and planning on returning FT. 50 hours per week max, great culture, and super interesting work. You get the opportunity to develop a more technical skillset if you want which is great, I have some buddies working in Python all day and others doing more strategic competitive research. Unimportant but theres also a ton of free food and booze which is nice. Happy to answer any questions anyone has.

1) Could you walk us through your recruitment timeline? Thinking about networking, the online assessment, and interviews.

2) Quick summary of your internship experience thus far? It sounds fantastic, very similar to what I'd like to do. Would love to hear about any projects you were on, as well as the team dynamics.

Most Helpful

Sure!

1. Networking isn't really required, but good to get a feel for what different areas of the company are like. Interview process is a resume drop, then assessment, then first round, then super day. Assessment is a big excel test with some short answer questions as well. First round is just a case interview, although some people I know were accelerated to SD immediately. SD is 3 interviews, 2 are cases and 1 is a product focused interview. Cases are same as MBB but with a heavier quant focus. Product is essentially a big brainstorm where you're given a household item and asked for 10 ways to improve it. You have about a minute to think before they expect answers. The rest of the interview is talking through your improvements and going deeper on a couple. Think questions about how you would test performance over time, data points you'd look to, etc.

2. Internship has been awesome, most of my day-to-day is SQL and excel, although Im at the point where Im building out a deck to present to my VP. There are a bunch of different areas you can get placed into, most people want Card, and I was fortunate to get placed into a super cool Card team. Most days I get in at 9 and out by 6, although the full time folks on my team will work into the night sometimes depending on what the "ask" is. There's 2 other interns on my team along with 5 FT folks, everyone is super cool and we get along quite well. There's a heavy focus on feedback and development which I like. I meet with my Sr Director multiple times per week to chat about my progress and questions, as well as just to shoot the shit.

In sum, people are pretty chill but very sharp. If you try to bullshit and ride the wave you will get exposed. Great technical skills are tablestakes for doing well. People care about WLB but there is an expectation that at times you will sacrifice it.

I really enjoyed my summer and can see myself there long term.

can someone link the applications for both? or has the deadline passed -- I'm seeing "this job cannot be found" when I try to search it up

Strat associate was open when I checked a few days ago, but BA is closed for now. I think they open it back up later if they still have seats left (but heard from a current intern that they don't expect to).

Currently working at C1 and spoke with recruiter today, full time BA will most likely open again but they closed it for now so all current applicants could be interviewed on a quick timeline

its made to test how well you can digest/analyze/present a lot of info in a short period of time. They'll let you analyze a ton of info and at the end come back to ask for your rec. Can't really prepare for it per say but definitely just practice a lot of chart analysis when you run normal cases and get a good night of rest before your interview lol

in terms of when you find out if you move on, for strat you will get a call from your interviewer(s) the evening of if you are selected to move on / receive an offer

Just picked up my 4th straight rejection without interview, this time from CapOne strat. Fellas we're gonna find out just how waterproof my toaster is pretty soon here.

Sorry about the rejection -- don't worry something will come along soon enough! Out of curiosity, when did you apply? Also, was it FT or intern?

Applied July 10th, FT. Was invited to a private coffee chat via a recruiter too...

I have, and got an interview last year. We'll see how it shakes out this year.

Has anyone heard back from R1 yet? Also genuinely curious if C1 is actually actively hiring - I heard there were layoffs but mostly in SWE roles.

I received a call for power day invite in the evening, the same day as my AM interview. Also from my interviewer

Does anyone know roughly how many 2024 grads c1 will hire for strategy? it seems like a lot of people are getting interviews, at least for R1. also any info on the breakdown of DC vs NY office hiring?

Just got BA FT Digital First Round online problem solving exercise. Seems like some people got Zoom first round interview though???

I also had the Digital First Round last year for the internship cycle and made it to Power Day so no idea if it indicates anything

I think most of the people who have gotten first round virtual interviews are applying to Strat. BA timeline seems to be offset by a bit but I could be wrong.

Yep. Both BA and strat have a live R1 and a power day. New this year, BA has a mini digital case assessment which I believe everyone gets within 48hr of applying. For me, I applied 7/10, got my virtual case same day, completed it 7/17, and got my R1 invite 8/1. My R1 is scheduled for 8/8, and they stated a 24hr turnaround for a decision on that.

I got a date confirmation the same day as the survey deadline but I had to follow up with my recruiter the evening before my interview to get the zoom link

Has anyone who interviewed this week heard back from R1 strat FT? I saw 1-2 posts here mentioning that they got a same day call, but nobody else

I think the usual turnaround is within 24 hours, but it could be as late as 3-4 days according to the guide!

How likely is it that people who get an offer will have the option to choose NYC as an office location? I heard it’s significantly smaller than McLean or the other offices but it’s kind of a dealbreaker issue for me since I have a lease in New York already.

As far as I know NYC base is 113k but bonus is likely less than MBB, maybe 7-8k?

DC is 106 base and NYC is 113 base. Bonus is 8k max for both. Worth noting however that promotional asymmetries can yield very positive results. Have a buddy there that got promoted 6 months into his analyst stint and received 120+ base and 10% bonus

So is it basically that if we pass R1, we get that call (phone??) from the interviewer, but if we don't pass R1 we hear from recruiter?

Just did my case for BA, fucked it up tremendously. Kids, please don't forget how to do algebra like I did. Be better than me. If you're staring at 15000+x-0.1x=0. you can combine the fucking xs to 0.9x.

Case was about 40min long and was a total of 3min of brainstorming, 0min of frameworks, and 37min of algebra.

For one of the cases yes. For the other one, more focus on qualitative stuff.

Above poster is correct, you can think of BA as the midpoint between corporate strategy and product management. I would definitely prioritize AIP over FIP. AIP is a better gig in just about every regard.

Agreed, and yeah that's a good way to put it for BAs being the midpoint between the 2.

If you're interested in more traditional banking roles at Capital One I would recommend the CRP and IBDP program, which are the development programs for Commercial Bank and Investment Bank respectively. CRP is cool because you get to rotate across the Commercial portfolio (ie, Real Estate, Healthcare, etc.) while most other commercial banking college hire programs are locked-in to a set industry. IBDP is pretty new so I don't know much about it, but it covers Capital Markets under the C1 brand, and then Aerospace & Defense under KippsDeSantos and Healthcare under TripleTree. I will say that C1's focus is on the consumer front, and while it has grown a lot in Commercial over the past decade or so, its not the company's focus.

I applied to the Strategy internship around July 24th. I was wondering if anyone applied around then and has heard back about an interview invite?

Hey there,

It sounds like you're eager to get updates on a certain situation. It's interesting that your friend received an R1 for strat – that's great news! If the recruiter mentioned that applications are rolling, it's possible that invitations could be sent out either individually or in batches.

Remember, the process can vary depending on the situation and the organization's practices. Keep an eye on your communication channels and stay patient. Fingers crossed that you receive some positive news soon!

Best of luck,
Ahmad

Heard back on the same day for the next round. But the email said to wait 3-5 days so it will vary in other cases.

When did you receive the email? I got the call back two days ago but still haven't received an email from the recruiter; I even followed up with the recruiter but no answer.

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back after a Powerday? Not sure if it makes a difference but I’m applying for Strategy group.

Current BA ADP. So far no word on salary adjustments this year. Market is very different than last year so I doubt there will be one. That said C1 usually bumps up the SA/BA/DA ADP salary whenever MBB increase their associate level starting comp, so if MBB make adjustments I would not shocked if C1 follows.

Current comp amounts below:

NYC: 113k

Chicago & McLean: 106k

Richmond & Plano: 96k

Signing bonus is ~9k, 1.5k for relocation, and end year target bonus of 3k (range is 0  - 6k, first year bonus that'll be paid out in Feb will be a prorated amount out of 3k). There is also the employee stock purchasing plan (15% of salary can be dedicated to buying stock at 15% discount, you can turn around and sell it immediately), and 401k matching (C1 gives you 3k regardless of what you do, then 1:1 match for first 3% of your salary and then 50% match for the next 3%). Work phone and home office supplies (keyboard, mouse, monitor, desk chair, headphones, etc.) are done through your manager.
