NYC Hype

I'm a high school senior applying to college this year and I've seen a lot of posts about people wanting to go to school in NYC to work in there. Is there a reason why everybody wants to go there. I understand investment banking bc of Wall Street but in consulting you can do your job anywhere. Does MBB even pay you more money depending on your location, cause to me NYC seems like the most unappealing place to live and work. I would love to know why there is so much hype around NYC compared to more affordable areas.

People wanna be in NYC cause it’s the hot place to be after college. It’s like wanting to go to an ivy or get a good job. Most people feel cool living in the big city post grad and working on wall street or some corporate job while most of your college/high school peers are stuck in shitty cities with bad jobs.

Besides that, there’s a select few kind of jobs, particularily finance, that you really want to be in NYC for because the top paying roles/firms are in the city, so there’s an advantage to being here.

And then outside of that, a lot of young people want to move here cause it’s fun - there is a fuck ton of stuff to do in a tiny square mile radius. Lots of food, culture, friends to meet, etc. that you won’t get in the same way in a T2 city that’s more spread out. Obviously if that doesn’t appeal to you then that’s also fine, but it appeals to a lot of people.
