Summer internship in credit to ER (full time), is this possible?
Hi all!
I’m currently a rising senior at a Canadian undergrad B-school looking to recruit for ER (full time). This summer I’m interning at a multinational insurance company as a part of their GA investing team covering fixed income (mostly just corporate & municipal bonds). As a part of the job I’ve been doing tons of credit analysis work on different issuers and writing credit review reports. While FI has been interest I would still prefer to work with equities. I particularly like ER (in Canada) but given the limited positions available and an unrelated summer internship, I’m not exactly sure what my chances are, if any.
(I’ve worked at a boutique AM and have been involved with my school’s finance club)
Knowing WSO never disappoints I would like to get some advice on how I can position myself for FT and whether the skills I’m learning now are transferable.
Thanks,
Canadian Monkey
Hard but nowhere near impossible. Imo you need something that will scream equities on your resume. Have you won any stock pitch or case competitions? The boutique AM sounds somewhat relevant. Do you know anyone who knows someone at an ER shop there? Best way to get in is to network, and best way to not get dinged is to have a great resume.
As for transferable skills I don't know much about FI analysis, but I'm going to assume alot of the technical credit stuff won't necessarily apply, but the soft skills (attn to detail, focused, that BS) are very much relevant.
