Feedback on the new design of WSO

Hi, I am starting this thread to gather feedback on the new design on Wall Street Oasis website.

I personally like the new design and it's sleeker look.

What do you guys think? What specific things do you like or dislike?

I like it. It's objectively better than the old one: content feed is larger and centered so its easier to read, navbar is sleeker, easier to navigate. Only change I would make is label the "New Topic," "Best Content," etc. filters since it was hard to notice them on the feed page.

People dislike a change at first since they're habitual by nature. I think you guys will start liking this over time.

NO. I HATE CHANGE. THE OTHER STUFF WORKED JUST FINE GIVE IT BACK. Or at the very least let us have a toggle e.g. like how salesforce lets you switch between classic and lightning.

Was this purely done out of a desire to "progress" or are there a particular benefits to the changes on the back-end e.g. easier to host, faster/cheaper, or something along those lines? Because if it's the latter that makes some sense. Still prefer the old version though, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Wilson | "If you don't have any enemies in life you have never stood up for anything" - Winston Churchill | "It's a testament to the sheer belligerence of the profession that people would rather argue about the 'risk-adjusted returns' of using inferior tooth cleaning methods." - kellycriterion

hey guys, please be patient...some things weren't quite implemented right.

It's kind of like serving a meal half baked....

I'm confident once it's all cleaned up (including inside forums) that most people will objectively agree it's better.  It's not anything super major, just more standardization and consistency coming across the site as we implement a design system across site + mobile app.

Stay tuned!

Patrick

Think you guys need to pay more attention to your mobile site too.

E.g. the +XX "rating" of individual threads on the front page/recently active page is far too big while the titles are too small making readability worse. In addition the colour of "2 new" or whatever is not working well in dark mode.

I can see the vision, just needs tidying up.

Yes yes there's a mobile app but I have enough apps.

yup, these will be cleaned before end of day tomorrow...the only thing that was pushed today was the forum container redesign + header + start discussion section.  The forum discussions themselves will also be getting a minor facelift in the coming weeks.

I personally have no issue with it - definitely following the 2020+ trend of sleeker, flatter, all that jazz. Was a little confused to see it initially, but as with most things, I'm sure it'll grow on me. I'll always take practicality over aesthetics, however, seems the team has done a pretty good job with that.

Side question for the WSO team - any mobile app fixes soon? Don't want to press you all, but still getting a lot of bugs regarding timeout codes and the inability to see a lot of comments. I'm sure this isn't an easy fix, so you all take your time. Just figured I'd ping and ask!

Usually I'm form over function (think backing up in a Countach), but with WSO, I am definitely function over form, so as long as the site is functional in an optimal way, I'm good. I haven't seen any glitches so far.

I would bring back the trending posts section on wallstreetoasis.com. I get that I could easily find the trending posts on their own page, but I found it convenient to just scroll down on the homepage and immediately see a small number of probably-interesting posts.

yup, this will come back, just got messed up with latest push

Readability of topic titles is worse on my phone, have to squint

On other matters since Patrick is reading this, I’ve noticed a huge uptick in overzealous moderation moving topics from the IB forum to the Jobs (and to a lesser extent the offtopic forum). Case in point is this thread: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/job-search/career-ruined-by-cs

Everything else aside, not having the "top discussions" section as the landing page is a TERRIBLE idea.  Guarantee that virtually everyone who uses the site wants that to be the landing page when they come here.

I come from down in the valley, where mister when you're young, they bring you up to do like your daddy done

Personally think its fine (looking on laptop, dark mode). One change I would do is make the blue "new comments" number (ex. 10 new) to me more bolded or something like it used to. Used to be much more apparent and eye catching.

Why the absolute fuck is s&t relegated to so far back? It's the 2nd most sought after finance career after ibd by college grads, most bank ceos came from s&t, it is the epitome of high finance. It doesn't belong alongside "real estate" and "consulting"

In the top, like IB, PE, etc. TR is moved so far back even though it’s so relevant

I like how sleek it is but good God I want to be able to see the trending forum posts on the front page instead of having to navigate around to find the trending

Ah sorry.

My observations are more a reflection of my opinions on general trends in modern web design. Ex: sticky navigation bars, floating buttons etc... which I think are distracting, as opposed to any real mistake on your part.

After all I still miss when the site logo was yellow and gold.

I noticed the spacing on a number of buttons is already fixed btw.

I guess I'm the only one who strongly prefers this new design?... especially on Chrome on an iPhone. For a long time it felt I had to go through weird navigational routes just to get to Off Topic, since I couldn't scroll all the way down. Oftentimes it seemed zoomed in oddly where I had to constantly scrunch and drag around.

At least for me it's unambiguously better, but sounds like there's been lots of feedback that's been getting incorporated over the course of the thread so maybe it's improved since the original post.

Thanks.  Yes, we are iterating as fast as we can...still many issues but I'm hopeful once those are ironed out and people have 1+ day to play with it they will see that it's objectively better :-)

As someone mentioned above, the rest of the site does not match but this was just the forum CONTAINER page and header redesign...this is being pushed out in stages anf forum topics are next.  Nothing dramatic changing here, just getting it out of the dark ages and into a more consistent with an atomic design system over the next several months.

I like it- sleek.

Disappointed however that the Corp Fin forum is still shadow-banned. Why do we have easy access to the crypto board, the fashion board, but not CF? I came to this site in 2014 exploring a banking career- decided CF was a better fit from the insight on WSO. WSO has helped me over the years and been the single biggest guide that led me to where I am.

I used to love the relevant posts section that comes up at the end of each post - what happened? Given ChatGPT plugin availability, could we bring this back please?
