Global Macro from Non-Target?
Was wondering how hard it is to get into a global macro fund right out of a non-target. I already do know a lot about it, but are there any specific resources you would recommend I could use to best position myself to break it? Are the recruiting timelines for internships the same as investment banking? How early do I need to start networking? Would an MBA from an ivy league be a good possible route if only ivy leagues are taken? Any advice on this would be much appreciated.
Breaking into a global macro fund right out of a non-target can be challenging, but it's not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips:
Knowledge is Power: You mentioned that you already know a lot about global macro funds. That's great! Keep expanding your knowledge. Read up on the investment strategies of big global macro funds.
Networking: Start networking as early as possible. Talk to as many seniors as possible who have gone through the process. Networking is everything, especially if you're coming from a non-target school.
Internships: The recruiting timelines for internships can vary, but it's never too early to start looking.
MBA: An MBA from an Ivy League could certainly help, but it's not the only route. I didn't land my first or second choice school, but I got into my second choice school (M7) on my second application.
Persistence: It took me 300+ applications to resolve my work visa and job situation. Don't get discouraged if you don't land your first or second choice.
Remember, every monkey has to start somewhere. Keep swinging from branch to branch, and you'll get there!
