Is this the wrong industry for extroverted people?
Ignore title -- I will be starting at a long only fund after college, and previously interned in investment banking. I thought the work in banking was dumb and am very interested in public equity investing. However, I also think I'm a pretty social, extroverted person, and I really enjoyed the culture of banking and doing fun things with my intern class. I know investing has a more solitary work environment and has a reputation for attracting more introverted people. Is this the wrong industry for me? Are there any extroverts out there who enjoy the work environment?
I think it depends on the role. I spend a ton of my day talking to people - our traders, other pms (internally and externally), management teams, consultants, sell side, risk, etc.
Candidly, though I’m an extrovert too, I wish I had more time to just sit and grind.
Thanks for the response! Do you feel like you develop close (ish) personal relationships with your coworkers like you might in banking?
It really varies. I did when I was an analyst. But at the pm level, we all have families, and mostly do our jobs. We are friendly but wouldn’t say close friends. Think that’s fairly typical.
As an analyst and having worked in small teams, I almost don't even exchange a word with colleagues on certain days. My PM does a lot of travel so most of daily interactions are via chat/email.
I interact a lot with brokers, sell-side, mgmt teams, so most of my conversations are with people not in my office. I'm very extroverted but love keeping the focus during the day - might seem to extreme but oftentimes I don't even go out to buy food so to keep the focus on my activities (doesn't mean I don't eat). Usually getting in early and trying to leave at a decent time at night. Then it's when I end up doing most of my daily interactions. I explored having more conversations with colleagues, sometimes it's okay but I don't feel the need to share much if we have not a lot in common, so keeping it mostly professional.
If you enjoy the work, I think you'll be very happy - nobody bothering you at work so you can stay focused and then free to express your extrovert side of your personality in other contexts.
