Breaking into banking with a Masters - Best course of action?
Hi all,
Just for some context, I'm a 20-something Australian with a European background. I graduated from arguably the most target uni in my country and majored in Finance & Economics. I've also 1.5+ years in management consulting.
I've always had the intention of moving to Europe and breaking into banking. Deal flow in Australia is very small, offices tend to be satellites, and companies usually hire out of undergrad where the competition may be considered more intense relative to other regions given the smaller market. I sat the GMAT a couple of months ago and ended up applying to a few different European universities. One course I was gunning for was the Msc Finance at Bocconi. However, my profile ended up falling short (feedback indicated GMAT was culprit) and they gave me my second choice (International Management). Another bit of information is that I'm sitting the CFA L1 in August.
My question: is the Msc International Management enough to get my foot in the door for banking? I ask this based on a holistic assessment of my profile (CFA L1, reputable undergrad, native English, loosely relevant work experience). Alternatively, should I continue applying to MSc Finance programs at other institutions (both this cycle and for the next after a GMAT resit)? Although I'm region-agnostic, the UK would definitely be a location I'd be considering and something like the MFA at LBS or the MSc Finance from Warwick.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this post and I appreciate your advice and suggestions!
Off-cyle internships in London
Thanks for your advice! Although, I'm a little confused. Do you mean to say I can go ahead with my plans and just apply to off-cycle internships?
Target school > Programme to get interviews. LBS/LSE/Oxbridge/HEC are top masters targets in Europe so you should apply to them asap.
This is great context - thank you. You'd say a Bocconi Masters is weaker than HEC for IB?
