Connections Across the Pond
I'm an American with an EU citizenship and I will be starting an undergrad in Finance at Bocconi next year with the hopes of breaking into London IB. I have already familiarized myself with the recruitment process in Europe and I'm ready to take it head on. Both my parents have worked in finance in the past, and I have been reaching out to many of their connections. Some of them are in London, which is very good, but the largest ones they have are in NYC, such as an MD at JP Morgan. I know these are guys that would help me, so my question is, is connections across the pond any use for European recruitment? So, if I were to apply for London IBD at JP Morgan, would the MD in NYC be able to reference me or provide any other kind of value in the recruiting process.
Honestly, do your career in the US.
Pays more, lower taxes, better exit options. Most of the top plaves have their HQ there so you're not seen as a Satelitte office etc.
Take it from someone who has done both locations and would move back to the US if not for family reasons.
In answer to your question:
Yes. Referrals are great from MDs. However, not as powerful as backing from London based people. Depends how strong the relationship ship is globally within that group.
