IB internship in London as a US Exchange/ Study Abroad Student?

Hi,

A little background about myself. I'm a European student pursuing my undergraduate degree in the U.S. I will be studying abroad at LSE for the entirety of the coming school year. I quite enjoy the U.S. but I would like to cast a wider net in terms of my career opportunities after graduation.

This brings me to my question for those of you familiar with IB in London/ the UK. While studying at LSE, will I be eligble to apply for Summer 2025 IB internships in the UK? Or would this be intolerated / frowned upon considering that I am merely an exchange student? (I believe I will be considered as a second year student while in the UK).

I apologize if this is a question which I could easily have googled, however, I am assuming that the landscape has changed quite rapidly with respect to Brexit and that information pertaining to the matter is therefore not widely available.

Thanks in advance.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, as an exchange student at LSE, you are indeed eligible to apply for Summer 2025 IB internships in London. Being at a prestigious institution like LSE can significantly enhance your profile and opportunities in the UK financial sector. Here are a few points to consider:

  1. Eligibility and Perception: As an exchange student, you are generally eligible to apply for internships just like any other student. The fact that you are studying at LSE, a top institution, should positively influence your application, as firms in London recognize the caliber of students from such universities.

  2. Brexit Considerations: While Brexit has brought changes to work and study regulations in the UK, universities and companies have adapted to these changes. As an EU student, you should check the latest visa requirements and work permissions. Universities like LSE often have resources to help international students navigate these issues.

  3. Application Strategy: Leverage your time at LSE to network extensively. Attend finance-related events, connect with alumni, and participate in finance clubs or societies. These connections can be invaluable in securing an internship.

  4. Prepare Thoroughly: Ensure your CV and cover letter adhere to UK standards. Be proactive in preparing for interviews by practicing common IB interview questions and staying informed about the industry.

  5. Timing: Be mindful of internship application deadlines, which can be quite early in the academic year. Make sure to apply within the appropriate timelines.

In summary, being an exchange student at LSE places you in a strong position to apply for IB internships in London. Focus on networking, preparation, and understanding the local application processes to maximize your chances.
