Vancouver Finance Jobs?
What sort of jobs are there in Vancouver for finance?
Banking has the big 5, National, and a few boutiques like Agentis and Fort Capital that pay well. Equity research has RBC, CIBC, Raymond James, etc.
PE/ VC is almost dismal? There's CAI which is a lower MM fund running like $100M maybe? Partners are very well known in finance though. Any other names? I think VC funds are like Rhino, Yaletown Partners, etc. Again, really small shops. Not sure what culture, hours, and comp looks like at these places.
Equities/ Fixed Income has CC&L and Leith Wheeler, but good luck getting a spot there quickly. Also don't know the pay at these types of shops.
Real estate has QuadReal (pension fund so no carry), BentallGreenOak, Sandpiper, lots of developers, etc. Curious on what RE pay really is like in Van since everyone talks RE here. Most of the investment roles will be in Toronto even if shops have Vancouver offices. According to a friend who is big on RE.
I love Vancouver but I'm confused on where to look for a job here that pays well and has good career trajectory lol please help. More interested in buyside vs. banking.
You need to leave YVR. There are not really jobs that enable you to afford living in the city cost effectively and the cost isn't worth it. You can spend similar dollars and live in a T1 or T2 American city where jobs + capital are much more plentiful.
Right but what if I want to stay in Van for reasons outside of a career? Is IB the highest paying gig in town for finance?
No, being a developer for one of the big tech cos that have set up shop probably is. Finance does not pay much in Canada. When I was recruiting out of there for our firm people were ~35% - 40% cheaper than the US for similar talent.
Don't think anyone will be able to add meaningfully beyond what m_1 said. I grew up in the Vancouver area but went to the US for the exact reasons as he described.
Best decision I've ever made.
Also grew up here, moving to another T1 city for work but trying to come back quickly for personal reasons. Just wondering what is truly available here. Also forgot in equities/ fixed income, PH&N is here too.
Some secondary and very small coverage teams for the big banks there. Otherwise all the ECM heavy retail distribution shops.
I loved Vancouver when I visited and was hell bent on finding a gig there. As m_1 said, not the place to be.
You've covered off most of what is In Vancouver. It is a small finance job market and some banks would cover parts of the Vancouver market out of Toronto or New York (e.g., Toronto based mining groups or covering BC Crown Corps out of government finance). Vancouver IB would be some combination of mining, forestry, real estate.
What’s pay like in yvr? For 4-5 yrs?
An analyst 2 I know got paid 190k in 2021 at a "big" shop in vancouver (Think National, Canaccord, RBC)
Small town for corporate finance-related careers, would advise you to move elsewhere! Did my tour in mining IB in town and have moved on to a strategy role outside of finance
Would throw in their pension fund BCI in there (probably the most established buy-side in Western Canada tbh). It's in Victoria so not exactly Vancouver though
Agentis lol
Pay 1st year analysts like 210 tho
I heard 125 + 50k bonus + (0-25) vested stock. horrible working conditions. Although the vancouver office should be better than the toronto one.
