2025 Sophomore Internship Questions

Was curious regarding the overall process for receiving a sophomore summer internship offer. Specifically:
1) Is it preferred to receive an offer before junior summer recruiting starts?
2) I’ve heard that sophomore summer doesn’t matter at all in terms of the position, company, etc. As long as it’s in the realm of finance, it should be good. Is that true?
3) Would a private equity internship be good for sophomore summer?
4) Are sophomore summer internships typically paid?

Based on the WSO Dataset, it is indeed ideal to have a sophomore summer offer in hand when you start recruiting for your junior summer. This strategy not only demonstrates your proactive approach and commitment to the finance industry but also alleviates some of the stress associated with the competitive recruiting process. Having an internship lined up early can also enhance your resume, making you a more attractive candidate for prestigious junior summer positions.

1. Depends on your profile. Will obviously help if you land something big that everyone on here is chasing. All things equal, absolutely preferred, but if you are at a target not necessary (again profile dependent). Have seen tons of people land with no or meh soph summer gigs, albeit with near perfect GPAs, likable people, networked, knew technicals, etc. Have also seen diversity land without anything if you qualify for any programs (which are hard to get in and of themselves). Either way, you will not start your soph summer until after recruiting is over so the value is just the fact you got an offer / made it through interviews.

2. Same as above. If you get an offer from UMM PE or MF PE or BB IB that will obviously be looked at differently (and set you apart). Search for threads on soph summer options. Even more impressive if you land a top front office gig without Dad/GWI/DEI/etc, but again not necessary as touched on above.

3. Yes.

4. Depends, but anything at the top will be almost full prorated base.
