Feeling disillusioned..internships with my credentials?

Hey guys I'm an economics and maths double major at UBC (canada, yeah I know). My core major is 3.5 at the moment. I just finished my second year here and I'm in Dubai for the whole summer.

I just have a couple of work experiences jotted down and they aren't anything spectacular; one was a local startup in a car-sharing company (more geared towards marketing) and the other is a club position that's more to do with charitable work.

I wanted to know what I can do kick up my chances, I'm going to make a hard push in my final two years of undergrad to network and get my name out there. There's just one problem, I'm on the west coast, I'm practically a non-target, and my GPA at the moment is pretty average.

I do A LOT of reading, keep on top of the financial stuff. I was planning on writing a sort of blog discussing macro events (China and its debt, oil movements, stock discussions) because I enjoy that.

I want to fucking work hard and then some more. Any tips?

p.s sorry for long rambling post; I just wanted to get a ton off my chest..

If you're from a non-target, think about applying to non-target shops... especially for your jr. internship.

I'd welcome an email from some random candidate saying "hey, this is who I am. I run this blog and btw here's a stock pitch - I realize this is unusual but I'd love to get your thoughts on it." Send it to someone jr. so they feel flattered and want to give you their opinion (since people probably don't ask them for opinions that often).

If you're good and you write intelligent stuff compared to your peers, this will probably give you a good boost. That said, blogs, pitches, etc. are higher-beta strategies (which non-target background may call for) - be thoughtful about what you write.
