Getting a foot in the door in other division
I work in PWM as a rising senior and I want to get into IB or S&T. I spoke with my friend who works at another bank and she said if you want to transfer the HR people are supposed to take you around and introduce you to people from the other divisions. Is this true? Should I try to do a shadow day instead? Externship? If someone can speak from experience that would be great. thanks.
Dont know what bank you work in but that sounds like a load. You have to go out of your way to contact people. Happens all the time. Also do something outstanding in PWM and talk to management there. They usually know people in other divisions.
Thanks Cervantes. I kind of thought she was full of it. But I have a follow up question. How should I approach the management in my office. I work closely with a team of 4 advisors and I have worked there since January. They have given me two performance reviews in which they sang my praises. (I don't think I was that unbelievable, but I work with a bunch of clients kids who are complete f-ups.) I want to approach them soon b/c recruiting for my school starts the first week of September and these guys are busy as hell. Any advice on how to approach them with the topic? Should I say I interested in both S&T and banking or just shoot for one of them? Thanks.
Definitely choose either one before you talk to your mgmt. Then tell them the truth if you have a good rapport with them. Say you want to get into whatever, and how do you do it?
Keep in mind that your manager will play a significant role in the move. Your manager will have to go to bat for you if you want to make the move. If you get interviewed, you can be certain that the interviewer will do their due dilligence on you--meaning they will call your manager and ask about you.
That being said, you need to be strategic in the way you approach your managers. Tell them you enjoyed your work but you think it isn't for you and you would like to do banking (or S&T). They should appreciate your honesty, but you should be very careful about framing this to them. By telling them your intentions they will be aware of of what you're trying to do and if they like you they may fight for you to get to where you want to be.
