How to enter IB in India?
Hey
I am a recent graduate from a good engineering college in India (non-IIT) and plan to enter investment banking in India.
I really want to know the avenues I can explore to enter the industry except for IIM mba?
Would love to know about your view and hear from people who have made the move.
Hey there! Diving into the world of Investment Banking (IB) in India is quite the adventure, and I'm here to shed some light on the path ahead. Based on the most helpful WSO content, let's explore how you can swing from the branches of engineering into the high-rise world of IB, even without an IIM MBA tag.
Campus Recruitment: The traditional route into IB in India, especially for bulge bracket firms, heavily relies on campus recruitment from premier institutions like IIM A/B/C and ISB. While you mentioned you're from a non-IIT engineering college, it's important to highlight that these firms do have a preference for candidates from top-tier institutions. However, don't let this deter you; there are other vines to swing on.
Lateral Hiring: There's a window of opportunity for lateral hires who have experience in domestic banks (such as Kotak, ICICI, SBI Cap) or other MNC banks. If you can secure a position in these banks and excel, moving laterally into a bulge bracket firm could be a viable path. It's a journey of building relevant experience and networking within the industry.
Work Experience in Banking Abroad: For those aiming to move from outside India into a front office role in India, gaining some work experience in banking in the US is recommended. This experience can be a significant advantage when applying to domestic banks in India or aiming for a lateral move up the ladder.
Networking and Skill Building: Never underestimate the power of networking. Connect with professionals in the industry through LinkedIn, alumni networks, and industry conferences. Additionally, focus on building your skill set – financial modeling, valuation, and understanding of the Indian market dynamics are crucial.
Alternative Qualifications: While an MBA from IIM is highly regarded, other qualifications can also bolster your profile. Consider certifications like the CFA or courses in financial modeling and investment banking from reputed platforms. These can add value to your resume and demonstrate your commitment to the field.
Start in Related Fields: Sometimes, a direct entry into IB might not be feasible. Starting in related fields such as accounting, law, management consulting, or investment management can provide a solid foundation and a potential pathway into investment banking later on.
Remember, the world of investment banking is competitive, but with determination, skill, and the right strategy, it's possible to carve out your path. Keep learning, networking, and don't be afraid to take calculated risks. Good luck on your journey to breaking into IB in India!
