How to Stay Positive

Feeling very down after graduating in May and still not having found an opportunity. The amount of effort I have put in (easily 300+ calls and thousands of emails) feels so deflating when I constantly hear no or we have no openings.

I am the last person that wants to be coddled and told I am doing a great job. However, my relentless optimism is dwindling as the weeks go by. I understand this is an awful economy, but I thought at least one opportunity would work out when you pull 70 hour weeks networking. I am self-aware that my background is not competitive for Goldman TMT or KKR.

I know this is a venting post, but very discouraging to think about all the effort and sacrifice (socially / mentally / physically) for things to not work out.

How were your internships?

You might have to temp/intern to hire until you get a FT job.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

4 IB which did not convert due to off-cycle or hiring needs (was asked to stay on for more time as an intern at all).

Was open to interning this Fall but every place I have reached out too (IB, PE, GE, VC, Corp Dev) have been no's.

4 IB internships and you cannot find an offer? Either a sign of the tough times or something isn’t right

Most Helpful

Been going through some tough times as well recently and tbh working on my relationship with god has easily been the most helpful thing for keeping me sane and calm. I know its not exactly career related, but taking a few moments each morning to read some of the bible and reflect on it throughout the day has helped so much. Best of luck, I'm praying for you

Completely agree. I held a leadership position on my schools catholic organization but have done a poor job this summer with my faith. Thank you for bringing me back to reality.

Of course man, I too have struggled with maintaining my commitment, but as long as we get back to grace eventually its all good.

One verse that really stuck with me recently was "Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." Great reminder of what prioritize at the end of the day, even if we're experiencing difficulties professionally/personally/academically

Not religious but have a super supportive family. Can make a night and day difference to have someone to speak to every week when I need a pick me up (either my siblings or my parents). It's a weird economy out there. Would have likely had a return offer at my summer internship in a space I've spent years to finally break into if after 2023 New Years, the economy didn't nose dived in the tech / startup scene.
