Starting out in S&T???
Hello all. European undergraduate student here - reasons for posting on IB forum explained in the end.
As with many, I have a wide-ranging interest in finance, and having gotten to the end of my degree, I explored different options for internships, as I thought it would be great to get some practical experience (thinking 1 year) before going on for a top tier masters in finance.
Though I think I could really like going down the IB/PE path for several reasons(1st option), I haven't discarded other options in high finance. My dilemma here is that my only interesting internship offer is for S&T at a top European bank, having been given the option to stay for 6 months (lining up for a potential January offcycle) or to stay for a 1 year S&T rotational program.
Question for the reader is: does an unrelated internship at a great brand name position me well at all to then later transition to IB through a master's, since this is a first step in my career?
Does the duration of this S&T internship make a big difference in this regard?
Could the internship be overall negative if compared to just going straight for a master's, in terms of IB-focused CV building?
Any point of view appreciated, but I'd really value the input from someone who looks through CVs in IB or someone that went through a similar experience, having ended up in IB or not.
Thank you for reading!
It certainly won’t harm your chances but ultimately S&T and banking are very different. If you want to max out your chances, maybe try join an equities sales desk or a corporate bond sales desk, you will at least have some connection with the underlying fundamentals. If you land somewhere in macro or sth like exotic derivatives, it would be more difficult.
Would suggest you try it out given it’s the only interesting option like you said, maybe you will end up liking it. Interesting work and not a bad life considering the hours.
