Those who lost the H1B lottery and only had 1 chance left, what did you do to during the year in between?
I’m currently a college senior and just lost my first h1b lottery. I will be working in IB but I only have one more chance next year because I don’t have a STEM degree. Would love to hear from someone who were on th same boat? I’m not sure whether I should still try to recruit for PE and hope that I can get the H1B next year or start looking into Canada/the UK/Singapore or talk to my company about green card or L1 visa. Any advice would be so much appreciated! Thanks everyone!
Based on the WSO threads, many international students in similar situations have taken various paths to navigate the uncertainty of H1-B visa lottery results. Here are some strategies you might consider:
Explore Internal Transfer Options: If your current employer has offices internationally, discuss the possibility of an L1 visa, which allows for intra-company transfers. This could be a viable option if you don't win the H1-B lottery next year.
Consider Other Visa Categories: While the H1-B is a common choice, other visas like the O-1 (for individuals with extraordinary ability) or E visas (treaty trader or investor visas) might be applicable depending on your circumstances and career achievements.
Look into Permanent Residency Routes: Although it's a longer-term solution, starting conversations about green card sponsorship with your employer could be beneficial. This is especially relevant if you see a long-term future with the company.
Expand Geographic Horizons: As you mentioned, considering job opportunities in countries like Canada, the UK, or Singapore could be a strategic move. These regions might offer more stability in terms of visa status and also have thriving financial sectors.
Networking and Mentorship: Connect with professionals who have been in your situation. Their insights and advice could be invaluable in planning your next steps.
Prepare for All Outcomes: Continue to excel in your current role and build a strong profile that would be attractive to employers, both in the U.S. and abroad. This preparation enhances your appeal, making you a strong candidate regardless of geographic location.
Each of these steps can help mitigate the risk associated with the H1-B lottery and ensure that you are well-prepared for various outcomes.
