What Should I Do? (No Offer)

I learned about IB a bit late and wasn't able to land a SA 2025 internship offer. I interviewed at WF but unfortunately fumbled some of the questions. I graduate in May of 2026 and don't want to extend my schooling until 2027 or try to jump right into an MBA. Is there anyone that could give me some advice on how I could still start in IB out of undergrad?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, if you didn't secure a summer analyst (SA) position and are concerned about breaking into investment banking (IB) directly after undergrad, there are several strategic steps you can take to enhance your chances:

  1. Network Intensively: Start reaching out to alumni from your school who are currently in the IB industry. LinkedIn can be a great tool for this. Don’t just ask for a job; seek advice, ask about their experiences, and build genuine relationships.

  2. Consider Off-Cycle Internships: Many banks offer off-cycle internships that can be a good way to break into the industry. These are less structured and can sometimes lead to full-time offers.

  3. Look into Boutique Banks: Smaller boutique banks can be less competitive but offer valuable experience and a potential stepping stone to larger firms.

  4. Expand Your Skill Set: Make sure you are proficient in financial modeling and valuation. There are numerous online courses and certifications that can bolster your skills.

  5. Prepare for Full-Time Recruiting: Full-time recruiting is another chance to break into IB. Prepare thoroughly for interviews, and make sure your technical skills are up to par.

  6. Consider Related Fields as a Stepping Stone: Roles in fields like valuation services, transaction services at a Big Four firm, or even roles in corporate finance can provide relevant experience and a possible later lateral move into IB.

Persistence and continuous skill improvement are key. Keep your options open and continue to pursue every opportunity with determination.
