Working towards niche area of Finance

Hello everyone,Long time WSO lurker and outside observer but thought I would post for the first time.I graduated from college last May (think Vandy, Berkeley, Cornell) with a degree in a great books program (almost like pre-law). Lots of critical analysis of great books, discussion, oral exams, etc. Not exactly a major that aligns for a career in finance, but I feel that my skills (combined with some self-studying of finance on my part) could allow me to break in.

I am currently working remote out of Chicago for a sports technology firm that helps build apps and websites for sports teams. With it being remote, I have had time to explore finance, and recently discovered the world of sports finance. I would love to work in the leasing/lending or M&A space in sports, but know that it's a very specific niche with no "pre-determined" career path. I have talked to a few individuals at the bigger banks with lending/leasing groups (JPM, Citi) but the majority of them "lucked" their way into the group (right place right time).

Anyway, I am just wondering A) what would be the best next steps to take to make myself a more desirable candidate and B) what would be a good place to start to build the skills/acumen to work towards sports finance-esque jobs. My dad luckily works in finance which helps a bit with networking and bouncing off ideas, but I know the job market is not the best right now (especially in finance).

I don't feel pigeonholed to a specific area like IB or anything, just wanting to see what areas/jobs offer growth and development as a whole starting out. Thanks again for the help.
