Best habits/hacks to maximize limited free time as an analyst

Interned in IB last summer, and returning as an analyst in a few months. Found it difficult to be somewhat productive on my commute to and from the office, despite trying to read and listen to podcasts, etc. Also getting lifts in during the week proved quite difficult.

I was wondering what strategies people have both on their commute, but also in general to maximize health and ability to stay sane when working long hours.

Although not a hack to save time, I typically try to work out in the morning. You won’t get as many emails and it saves you from backing out if you save it until after work. Obviously prioritize sleep if you worked until 3am the night before though. You should definitely use your weekend time to workout too, so you can easily get 3-5x per week

Maximizing your limited free time as an analyst requires strategic planning and smart utilization of any available moment. Here are some effective strategies and hacks based on insights from the Wall Street Oasis community:

  1. Optimize Your Commute:

    • Educational Podcasts and Audiobooks: Continue listening to podcasts and audiobooks that are relevant to your field or interests. This can be a great way to stay informed and make your commute feel productive.
    • Meditation Apps: Use this time for mental health by listening to guided meditations. It can help you prepare for the day ahead or decompress after a long day.
    • Offline Work: If possible, download emails or documents to work on offline. This can help you get a head start on the day or wrap up loose ends on your way home.
  2. Efficient Exercise:

    • High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): Short, intense workouts can be more feasible and just as effective as longer sessions. Look for 20-30 minute routines that you can do at home or a gym near work.
    • Active Commuting: If feasible, consider walking or biking to work. It’s a great way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.
    • Desk Exercises: Utilize short breaks to do stretches or simple exercises near your desk.
  3. Mental Health and Well-being:

    • Scheduled Breaks: Even on your busiest days, take short breaks to step away from your desk. A brief walk or a moment of mindfulness can significantly reduce stress.
    • Social Interactions: Make an effort to engage in non-work-related conversations with colleagues. This can provide a mental break and help build supportive relationships.
    • Hobbies and Interests: Keep a small hobby that doesn’t require much time but offers a mental break. This could be anything from sketching to writing a journal.
  4. Nutrition:

    • Meal Prep: Prepare healthy meals in advance to save time and ensure you’re fueling your body with nutritious food.
    • Healthy Snacks: Keep healthy snacks at your desk to avoid energy slumps and the temptation of less healthy options.
  5. Time Management:

    • Prioritize Tasks: Use tools like the Eisenhower Box to prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. This helps in focusing on what truly matters.
    • Limit Multitasking: Focus on one task at a time to improve efficiency and reduce the time spent on each task.
  6. Professional Development:

    • Networking: Use any free moments to build and maintain your professional network. This can be through LinkedIn, attending webinars, or even quick coffee chats.

Remember, the key is not to fill every moment with productivity but to find a balance that allows you to maintain your health, well-being, and professional growth.

Second morning workouts, meal prep on weekends if you’re cooking/want to stick to a meal plan, pay to have your laundry done (it’s like $40/week but saves a ton of hassle if you don’t have in-unit), depending on your group I’ve seen people not bring bags into the office so they can dip as soon as they want and not have it raise suspicion. Also learn to enjoy the slow times because there’s always going to be a busy time where you absolutely hate your life.
