How to compete with people on linkedin?
Hello everyone,
I've noticed that whenever I'm on LinkedIn, I find myself feeling inadequate. It seems like everyone else has better extracurriculars, internships, scholarships, and more accomplishments than I do.
I attend a non-target school in Toronto where I'm actively engaged in extracurricular activities and maintain good grades. Despite my efforts, I can't help but feel overshadowed by those who hold research assistant positions and have multiple internships under their belt. I faced disappointment in my freshman year when I didn't secure my first internship, but I'm currently enrolled in the co-op program and I will be landing my first internship/work term this upcoming summer.
Comparing myself to others feels overwhelming. I constantly see classmates securing scholarships or internships I'm interested in, and it's disheartening to think that recruiters might prefer them due to their more extensive experiences.
I want to clarify that I am actively seeking research positions, opportunities, and internships. However, it's challenging for me given my circumstances—I don't come from a well-off background.
I'm struggling with this situation. What should I do?
Was previously at a non-target and secured great internships, even though I was super late into the finance game. My advice would be to stop worrying about other people on LinkedIn. Like all forms of social media, its just people highlighting their accomplishments and not mentioning their weaknesses or failures. Also a lot of the achievement posts are really just nerds starving for validation.
Focus on yourself and what you can control. Network, keep your GPA up, and study the guides. If you're doing all of these, just be patient (which is often the hardest part).
Also, stop comparing yourself to others. There's always going to be someone with a better internship, better club role, better background, etc. You're not supposed to "compete" with people on LinkedIn because its not a contest. It should just be you vs. you. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Linkedin is kind of just another format for your resume. Focus on doing the best for yourself and getting to a good job, then excel in your role whatever you do.
Agree with guy above - there’s always going to be a lot of people who are better so no point in comparing, you’ll only be disappointed with yourself if you do
Op LinkedIn is just packaging, you don’t need to be a LinkedIn final boss
It is hard, but just avoid comparing yourself. People constantly over inflate what they’ve done. High likelihood that anyone with an internship or research position in undergrad has done nothing of value for their position and are making it seem like they’re god’s gift to said field. Just focus on yourself. Some of the worst people I’ve seen in this industry have all kinds of useless accolades and brag about ‘attending a conference’ etc
Pretty simple, just don't compare yourself to people on LinkedIn. It's a fruitless exercise. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Edit: How is this bad advice? If it hurts to do X, stop doing X. This doesn't need to be rocket science.
