Should I dump my girlfriend?

Senior year, accepted IB offer on west coast (think Cowen, Moelis, Evercore, William Blair, etc). I have been in a relationship with a girl since junior year. She is a nice person, but she only got an offer for a marketing position for a consumer packaged goods company (think P&G, Unilever, Colgate). I have been talking to another girl who is a year older than me who works at a BB in san fran. Should I dump my current girlfriend because her job lacks prestige? I eventually want to lateral into a BB and I don't want my co-workers next year to think I am a loser because I am dating a girl who does not have a good career. Any advice is appreciated.

If your dating choices are driven by how others will perceive you, yes, dump this girl. Do her a favour.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

I don't get it, how is it a favor for her? She tells her friends that she is dating a "banker", and it helps increase her social status. I just feel like I am being used in this relationship. Also I only want to associate with other investment bankers going forward, because I believe that if you associate with people who are successful, you will have a better chances of becoming successful yourself

I'm going to echo what SSits said... If you're that concerned with what she does and that she's only working in Marketing for a CPG, you have a lot to learn. To be blunt, go ahead and dump her because she's better off without you. It's shit like that which will make people think you're a tool. If you're so concerned with social status, you'll lose sight of what is actually important in life.

I have never thought of using a girlfriend as a career tool. If your girl is dating you only because you are a banker, you should definitely drop her. If it's a serious relationship, I don't see why you should drop her b/c job prestige. You only want to associate with investment bankers... You want your gf to steal your analyst position bro? Are you and your new gf going to brag to each other how awesome your careers are?

i think that the best possible gift your girlfriend can receive in this wonderful new year is a goodbye from you. if that's how your brain is wired you have no business dating anyone - get a "fuck app" and keep things simple if for no other reason than to avoid being stabbed to death in your sleep (i am sure the gene pool would be relieved).

for some reason I really hope you're soon-to-be-ex knows you're posting here

There is a pragmatic factor to this decision too. This new girl I have been talking too works at one of the top tech m&a groups in the country. I don't know how much help she can be when I want to lateral. I know this thinking way into the future, but it would be nice to have someone who can let me know when positions become available before they are posted. Physical attractiveness wise, I think they are both pretty comparable 7 to 7.5, nothing extraordinary. I won't be downgrading in that area.

You should try to hook up with one of the gay tech CEOs. They could give you a sweet job. Have you tried messaging any on linkedin to inquire about this?

Are you unable to read? "I only want to associate with I-bankers" why would I want to work for a tech firm and I am not gay, so there is your answer.

I'd grade it a tad lower. Was a bit too transparent for my tastes.

Lets go back a bit. Before you dated your current gf, you had no sense that you will end up superior and she is destined to be inferior, only serving to drag you down?

but, seriously. i hope your op is a joke. otherwise, what troubles you is truly disturbing on many levels.

Not joke, her passion has always been marketing. I told her she should go into consulting or banking, but she doesn't like the work life balance. I just don't understand that kind of mentality, a brand manager makes 90-100k, and takes a while to get promoted to that position and probably post-mba, think of it as a equivalent of a VP in IB. That is a pittance of a salary for the amount of time it takes to reach that level. If I am going to spend the same amount of time, I want to have a higher return on investment for my time, because you will not live forever. Additionally, I want to be in a serious relationship after uni and I would rather my partner make a good salary so we can have a higher combined income for whatever is after.

you are weighting $$$ quite heavily into the relationship equation. personally, i think it is sad and comical if you truly think like that but you have every right to be happy. if she thinks alike--the more money the merrier--, then i don't know what to say. but if she thinks differently, then i think it is a mutual benefit to break apart.
