The New China Friend or Foe?
The rise of China has been nothing but amazing over the last 25 years. Yet, beneath the surface of this rising nation is a series of mixed messages that is being sent to world community, free trade with authoritarianism. A good example of this can be seen with the Google announcement that they may pull out of China; because they have evidence that there was consistent cyber attacks made against the company. According to sources at Google, a coordinated cyber attack was targeted directly at their popular Gmail service in December, with the attacks being focused on the email boxes of those who are Chinese human rights activists. While these attacks were unsuccessful, the company said they are troubled by what seems to be an indirect coordinated effort by the Chinese government to support such action.
What this shows, is that the world community must take a cautious approach to China. While it is great that they have been liberalizing their free trade policies over the last 25 years, the government is still cracking down on civil liberties. It is this authoritarian grip that the Communist party has over the country that could pose one of the largest threats to stability in the region; as China says one thing and engages in another on whole host of issues. The latest incident with Google, only underscores a pattern that has been consistently engaged in since the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.
fuck google. pseudo-humanitarians. i think americans need to get off china's case.
We'll see how this one plays out, especially how the Chinese government responds. I think this is a huge deal, and if Google does end up leaving China, it could cause a wave of business leaving the hottest emerging market that has been building up many bubbles lately
Funny how Google isn't a fan of China now yet they provide and help enable censorship for the Communist Chinese Govt. Can't have it booth ways.
It doesn't matter how big China gets, it's not like any Western companies can freely do business there. That's the major difference between India and China. When GS wants to do business in China they have to essentially kow-tow in front of Chinese entities, in India GS is it's own entity.
The New China Friend or Foe?
If your asking a question like this it makes me a little worried about you. There is no such thing as ever lasting friendships nor enemies. The Chinese welcomes the world to do business with it, however its government doesn't believe in Condoning dissenters.
The Chinese are our friend, but from the day they opened their doors to the east, they have always told us that we operate in a different form of free trade. These are the rules you must follow . They have also told us that they were here to Learn/steal foreign technology and make HARD currency for China. The Chinese have come a long way in comparison to any other country.
It takes a lot of finesse and a lot of sleepless nights to do business in China, making connections and planning for the future. Its a different environment then lets say Russia or Japan.
Yes i'm Chinese American, born here raised in NYC, I love America but Americans fail to adapt to other peoples cultures and ways. Have the Chinese really strayed from the straight and narrow. If you can accept the Confederate flag be flown in the south you can accept a few hard to face facts about China.
Google is not a huge deal, a huge deal is Coke leaving China. Google is something china can live without but maybe not vice versa
