Today’s Michael Milken
Just finished reading Predator’s Ball, and it got me thinking: who is the Michael Milken of today? Is anyone close to what Milken was?

Probably Rick Reider, the bond king
Pretty sure that title deservedly belongs to Bill Gross
Michael Milken was ultimately a guy who identified a balance sheet innovation that would allow corporate titans to grow faster, so a Michael Milken of today should be doing the same thing.
I would argue that the main balance sheet innovation among large financial sponsors today is the acquisition of captive insurance companies. Apollo kicked it off with Athene. KKR has Global Atlantic. There was the Blue Owl deal this week. Insurance is smart because you can grow your private equity and private credit platforms with permanent capital and you don’t have to deal with LPs.
So, to that end, I think Marc Rowan is the Michael Milken today. Oh, and I forgot to mention, he cut his teeth at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Wanted to leave that for the end.
