UK M&A Internships for Non-IB Jobs?

My primary interest is in Trading, quantitative or more fundamental. Having said that, I'm trying to keep my options open and explore as much as I can for now.

I have the opportunity to do a 3 month long first year unpaid internship during my winter break at a small M&A shop. I know for a fact I don't want to do IB, but may be interested in PE and am potentially interested in AM/ER/fundamental HFs

My main concerns are the monetary opportunity cost (from working elsewhere) and the time opportunity cost (both for life and catching up on studying).

Should I do it?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're in a bit of a pickle. You're interested in trading, quantitative or fundamental roles, but you also have an opportunity for an M&A internship.

Here's the thing, my friend. An internship in M&A could provide you with valuable experience that could be beneficial in a variety of roles, including PE, AM, ER, and fundamental HFs. It could give you a solid foundation in financial analysis, valuation, and deal structuring, which are all skills that are transferable to the roles you're interested in.

However, you've mentioned that this is an unpaid internship and you're concerned about the monetary and time opportunity costs. That's a valid concern. You need to weigh the potential benefits of the experience against these costs.

If you feel that the experience you would gain from the M&A internship would significantly enhance your skills and make you more attractive to future employers in the roles you're interested in, it might be worth considering. But if the costs are too high and you feel that you could gain similar experience in a paid role, or use the time more effectively to study and improve your skills, then it might be best to pass on this opportunity.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. It's about what's best for you and your career goals. So, take some time, weigh your options, and make the decision that feels right for you. And remember, I'm here to help guide you along the way!
