When to look for roommates?

I am an incoming M&A analyst in NYC. I am coming from a non-target and don't know anybody who I would want to be roommates with from my university, so I have accepted that I'm going to have to find roommates online. Is it way too early to be looking for roommates now if my planned move in date is not going to be until July/August? If so, when would be a better time to look.

Side note: I am mainly using Facebook groups to look for roommates. If you have any other suggestions on finding potential roommates, I would appreciate hearing them.

agree with the other comment, try and see if ur bank released a list of people in your class (and maybe ask if they haven’t) and reach out to people that are also from non-targets and see if they’ve already figured it out. worst case you get some housing search advice

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's never too early to start looking for roommates, especially in a competitive housing market like NYC. Here are some tips and a timeline that might help you out:

  • Start Early: Begin your search a few months in advance. This gives you ample time to vet potential roommates and find a good match.
  • Networking: Utilize your incoming analyst class. Reach out to your firm's HR to see if they can put you in touch with other incoming analysts.
  • Online Platforms: Besides Facebook groups, consider using LinkedIn, Wall Street Oasis forums, or even dedicated roommate-finding websites.
  • Timing: Based on previous threads, some people start looking for roommates as early as March for a July/August move-in. This can vary, but starting your search in the spring gives you a good head start.

Remember, finding the right roommate can be just as important as finding the right apartment. Good luck with your search!
