Possibility to Lateral Up?

Currently leaving an associate role at a larger PE firm in a very niche industry (~$15 Billion AUM) to join a slightly smaller infra / industrials fund (~$4 Billion AUM) that just closed a $1.5 Billion fund. Really wanted exposure to infrastructure and other types of businesses. Just curious how the AUM size will affect my ability to lateral down the road? Has any lateraled to a larger fund at the senior associate / VP level?

Certainly possible if you previously worked at a large fund or even did banking at a bulge bracket. Even if you didn’t, it is still possible. Generally, the stronger your background (such as if you went to a great undergrad with a high gpa), the more likely they will be to interview you. It isn’t solely determined by your current fund.

One of the most extreme cases I’ve seen was a guy who went from a MM IB to a LMM fund (couple hundred million AUM) to Lone Star.
