Private equity real estate, infrastructure, and energy operations

I'm looking for finance and strategic planning positions in PE portfolio companies in Latin America as a way to gain operating experience in my target market before moving back into a turnaround/startup environment as a principal. Obvious opportunities exist at buyout and growth equity funds in the region; however, I am unfamiliar with how energy, infrastructure, and real estate funds manage operations within their portfolios. Specifically, are there portfolio companies that operate these assets? Is it possible that there are interesting strategy/finance positions at this level?

It really depends on size. In Latin America, there are guys who will buy a large stake in, for example, a company that owns and develops many shopping malls. Could you find an interesting job working for that developer? Sure, why not. There are also guys who will provide the equity for a single deal, such as the equity behind the construction of a high-rise in Brazil. There isn't really a portfolio company here. You see similar phenomena in the US.

I could see the same being true for infrastructure. Are you buying a toll road? Or energy. Are you buying an entire oil company or just an oil well? You should be able to answer these questions already.
