Is Post-MBA NYC IB To Asia MF PE A Realistic Goal?
Hello all, may I ask if it is a realistic goal to aim to exit to Asia MF PE (Apollo, KKR, Carlyle) after a post-MBA NYC BB IBD associate stint without any pre-MBA related experience? I know that aiming to exit to MF PE in NYC with such a background is near impossible, with likely only LMM and MM in reach. I am looking at Singapore as it is where I am from.
no
Speaking as someone who explored this before: yes but you’ll start off at the same level as analysts who exit IB (pre-MBA associate) so it may not be worth it depending on how old you are.
US experience is always valuable and being Singaporean should also be a huge advantage. However, going back in tenure was the deal breaker for me because you didn’t get access to carry to make up for the lost pay (even with the tax savings, you’d give up both comp and seniority).
A lot of people say that transitioning to NYC MF PE from post-MBA NYC BB IBD is impossible without pre-MBA PE experience, but do you think this is really true? If you really go all out and leverage your connections with the MDs at the MF PE funds you work with when doing deals at your bank, won't it be possible to pull some strings at some point and enter at the director/MD level? After all at that point once you establish your contacts there people there know that you are competent/can be trusted and that you can get things done. Outside applicants don't have that same kind of credential in that sense.
