Undergrad: Wharton vs. NYU Stern BPE vs. Columbia GS (Econ)
I am a German student living in Hong Kong. I am looking for a career in consulting - in either US, Europe or Asia. I got accepted into all three of the programs and currently leaning towards Wharton, although Stern's BPE program is extremely selective, and Columbia is very prestigious as well. Which college should I choose considering college experience and career prospects?
Do you plan on doing an MBA many years later? Irrespective of your answer, NYU should be crossed out.
I definitely consider doing an MBA after college and after a few years of work experience, as the big consulting firms often require an MBA at some point. However, I have heard studying at Wharton undergrad covers big parts of an MBA curriculum and often makes an MBA unnecessary
Yeh but who cares about the curriculum, lol. A Wharton bs means that you will be almost a certainty for H/S/W MBA, assuming all else equal.
What other dimensions do you have to worry about? That might unmask your needs to attend another not Wharton school
Is NYU really not that high-caliber? I know NYU is extremely well represented, but is it considered much lower than Wharton and other Ivys?
No not too much lower.
An NYu bachelors in a relevant area will likely get you what you want, a H/S bachelors in even an irrelevant area could likely get you what you want.
A Wharton bachelors in a relevant area will almost with certainty get you what you want- assuming all else equal.
First off, massive congratulations OP that's not easy to do. Like the other poster, I myself would 110% choose Wharton. The BPE NYU program (I'm familiar with it) may confuse recruiters - 'is this student a poly-sci major, econ major, etc?'. Everyone and their mother, so to speak, understands and knows UPenn Wharton. And, even though I'm not a fan of rankings when it comes to undergrads, Wharton 9 times out of 10 is in the top three spots each year for undergrad business programs. In fact, I have at least half a dozen friends who transferred out of their initial colleges/unis (think GTown, Cornell Dyson) into UPenn Wharton - it's that good of a school.
wharton
Honestly you'll be in a really good position to pursue any career in finance coming out of either of those 3. Don't forget to think about other factors that are more personal for you.
Wharton > Colombia
Don't even consider NYU against those two
Wharton seems to be the consensus. Did you apply to H/S too? Could you share rough range for SAT score?
Yes, I applied to H/S too, but unfortunately didn't get in.. My ACT was a 34
H/S sure are tough to get in, that's a top ACT. All the best.
Agreeing with others here, Wharton! I believe it's also cheaper than NYU and Columbia (esp. considering cost of living). Philadelphia is an amazing city and the campus community is really tight knit. Whereas NYU campus is really "nonexistent". If you are into the liberal arts, then consider Columbia. Wharton (and Penn in general) is much more pre-professional and everyone is career-oriented - you may not like this college experience.
Wharton hands down. The curriculum, network, brand, career opportunities, extracurriculars available are amazing at the undergrad level.
