From S&T to Hedge Funds?

Hi all! I'm about to start my S&T career in one of the BBs, but my goal is to transfer to any Hedge Fund because of the higher compensation. Does anyone have relevant resources/information/experience?

I heard that only specific trading desks could exit to HFs - is the Bank Portfolio Management desk one of them? Are there any other criteria for exiting to HFs?

Best advice is to do what you like. Good traders move to HF and ultimately are successful. Going to a desk with good placements but that you don’t love won’t lead to a fruitful career in a HF.

You can also be really good in the sales side and thrive off of managing a book but also a franchise and generating flows and the like.

Good luck.

depends on role you want and type of hedge fund to be honest.

Since my desk does bank liquidity pool management (UST investments), I guess the skillsets would apply to Macro hedge funds...? Regarding the role - I think most sell-side traders are seeking an investment role (portfolio management role), including myself. Any thoughts?

what role do most sales people move to at hedge funds?

depends on strategy, I don't really know much outside of L/S equity and S&T people don't end up here outside of execution roles.
