I have one grad scheme offer and one internship offer, what is the best strategy?
I am lucky enough to have an internship offer from company A and grad scheme offer from company B. The internship is this summer and the grad scheme starts a few weeks after the internship ends, I have signed both offers. My first choice would be to get a grad scheme offer from company A and work at company A instead of company B, the grad scheme offer at company A would start at the same time as the company B grad scheme.
What is the best way to play this? Should I tell company B about company A or vice versa? If I do end up getting a grad scheme offer from company A, would it be okay to renege on the offer from company B? How much notice would I need to give? Would it be a bad idea to update my LinkedIn status to say that I am doing an internship at company A?
In my opinion, you should not show your cards to company B. They might take it badly.
One thing is for sure, you already got the offer from B in your pocket. Now getting a grad from A is unsure. Worse scenario you’ll go to B if A grad fails and you’ll go to company B with even more experience which they will appreciate more. Go to company A, use company B’s offer for leverage and try your best to get an offer from A. If you get a grad position from A, just respectfully reject the offer from B - this is the job market, they will understand. Worst case, you get blacklisted from B for a couple of years, which should absolutely not matter. If you are great at what you are doing, B’s doors will never close on you…
sounds like solid advice, thanks very much!
If you get an offer from A, is it certain that you still start this year? You could ask A to defer your offer till next year, that way you get best of both worlds (and if you actually prefer working at B you can renege on A halfway thru the year and not piss anyone off)
Most likely that an offer from A would start this year I would say. There is a chance that that is possible but asking to defer may look a bit suspicious do you not think? Unless I have a good excuse?
it might but a good excuse is easy to come up with (want to do volunteering, travel etc. for a year) HR won't take you for your word if you dont exactly do it. Just a thought as an additional option
