Maths and Economics VS Maths with Data Science
Hello monkeys!
I am fortunate enough to big holding an offer from the LSE. I am allowed to switch to any course within the mathematics department, but I officially 'hold' the offer for Maths with Data Science.
Maths and Economics has a lot of econometrics (as well as standard micro/macro economics), where as Maths with Data Science has a lot more programming and algorithms (and more maths modules too). Both are highly flexible in the final year.
I was wondering which would be more valued for trading - from what I know:
On one hand being knowledgeable in how the economy works is helpful for macro trading, and HF/PT shops value econometric analysis.
On the other hand, being versed in programming is a requirement for the majority of quant shops.
For S&T, does it make much of a difference?
I'd pick whatever interests you the most, to be honest. These jobs are very much "apprenticeship" jobs i.e., you learn on the job.
Had a SA offer at GS for s&t studying a degree that isn’t that mathsy (still stem tho). Doesn’t make a difference in terms of recruiting tbh.
Depending on hedge fund strategy mathsy degrees aren’t really important, I’m assuming you’re targeting discretionary macro or quant which I have 0 xp w so can’t rly answer; for L/S hedge funds it doesn’t matter - interning at one and it’s not that mathsy tbh
Have experience at both s&t/systematic HFs.
for snt doesnt really matter, quant hfs latter no brainer. Fully systematic funds really dont consider economics, finance majors seriously.
Thanks for the response.
My only concern with the latter is that Maths at the LSE isn't generally as well recognised compared to Oxbridge/Imperial maths (which I got rejected from). Does 'prestige' matter in this context?
