Opportunity for 'Refined Metals Operator' at Trafigura, Worth pursuing?
Curious to know if a Metals Operator position is worth securing at Trafi? I currently have a role at a utility company right now which pays 100k+ CAD but the work itself is quite boring and im not learning anything. (ie. making a PowerPoint, data analysis etc). I've worked at Glencore before and it was unfortunate my team wasn't supportive and the environment was toxic, so i left (also pay was crap). On the positive side, I was learning alot and doing tasks that were of interest to me. I've heard Trafi's culture is even harsher and employee retention is quite low, can anyone confirm?
TLDR: Have a good-paying job right now but the tasks are boring. Would you step back into working for a trading firm or stick to oil and gas?
How was the culture toxic at Glencore? Could you share any incidents/stories?
Let's just say I use to get yelled at when they were training me. They also made it very obvious who they liked in the team and who they didn't. Again I can't speak for the whole company, I genuinely believe the team I was paired up with were just a bunch of passive aggresive cocky new-grads.
I have some second-hand experience with Trafi, and I think the office your job would be at.
Don't do it, in my opinion.
1) those operator roles generally aren't meant for you to get into a commercial role. This point can't be driven home enough
2) from what I've heard, Traf is a harsh culture with poor employee retention
I appreciate your honest opinion. At first glance, it seemed promising only because it's with a reputable company like Trafi but Its probably more or less ops-heavy. I also heard the exact same things about trafi from former Glencore colleagues but I just wanted a third opinion. Cheers

On linkedin Trafi shows me 4 years, whereas Glencore was 5-6 years. My colleage at glencore once told me that if you ever messed up there, they wouldnt hesitate to throw coffee on you.
Left Glencore a couple of years ago and while I never heard the coffee thing, they're still proud of retaining that kind of culture (though it's slowly changing under Gary is what I've heard). Could go as far as to say that Glencore's culture is as bad or even worse than Apollo's.
I know a guy who did ops at Trafi and he said the pressure that you are put under as a new guy is unbelievable. Have had their operators call me 10+ time in 15 min and though i like how the operators harass to get an answer that is a bit extreme. Also it was pretty clear on the lack of market knowledge and they made my operator's life hell as well. But the general impression i get is, atleast in the energy markets, if you want to go to operations just go to an energy major or equivalent in the metal sector.
And the comment above on you never moving to a commercial role is pretty accurate. Have seen people jump from their ops after a couple of years to a TDP for example. I've never seen someone who did ops there and then got moved into Trading.
