Strategist to Trading?
Hi All,
I'm a strategist at a research/advisory shop specializing in Macro and FX (but I don't typically publish specific trade ideas). I have a two-part question:
1) Would you all agree that if I want to move into an analyst / junior pm role at a macro fund, it would make sense to get some experience on the trading side first?
2) I've been thinking that a trading role on an FX/rates desk would be ideal. Is it feasible for a strategist (economics MSc, ~3yrs experience in the field, some programming skills in R and python) to make a shift like this?
Thanks for your help!
From what I've seen at my BB (top tier in trading) most traders do not exit into PM roles. They tend to exit into trading roles at HFs. If you want to be a research analyst at a HF, you should get experience with investment ideas and research. Market making is not what it used to be prior to 2008 and is much more of a reactionary role. You are not taking a view and loading up huge trades. Those days are over. I would not recommend making a move into a BB trading program. You have a better shot at going straight from your research role if you can convince a HF that you have good market ideas.
thanks
