STRUGGLING : STAY WITH MY CURRENT INTERNSHIP IN S&T OR SWITCH TO A SUMMER INTERNSHIP IN A MAJOR IB IN PMW ?

HELLO GUYS,

I am New on WSO. I am currently interning at a major company well specialized in European Equities in a Sales & Trading position.
By the way, I am from Paris and currently doing an exchange semester in NY.

Indeed, I know that the deadlines are almost finished for summer internship program in major IBs, but I am very motivated to get one in major US IB such as GS, MS, JP... ect, to strength my CV.

I am applying to PMW summer internship and I have read a lot of bad comments on this website on PMW because I guess a lot of people are in IB, PE, HF... ect

Can someone give me some advices?

My long-term goal is S&T in a major IB or HF in NY, do you think is worth to get a summer internship in PMW this year as I have still two years left before graduation and then apply for a S&T summer internship next year ? or stick to my current position this year ?

Thanks a lot guys and sorry for my bad English.

First of all, employ logic, You want in S&T at a big bank or HF. Fine. You are currently interning with a large firm in a S&T role. Fine You are considering changing/applying to PWM this Summer. Why???? This clearly does not align with what you want to do, WTF are you thinking? I guess if it is your only option for the summer besides jacking off at home, then maybe it is worth considering. FYI, when I am interviewing people I would ask why they did job X and how it would help them achieve their goal. If the answer to working in McD's was "I had to pay for uni", fine I accept that, but you had better think of a damn good reason to change to PWM.

Just get your shit together, see if you can stay at your current firm as it sounds much more aligned with your long term goals.

Hi Triple Down,

Thanks for your answer, haha "jacking off". I am applying for a summer analyst PMW intern position ONLY and ONLY for the brand name of the fucking american IB as I am from paris and we don't have a lot of opportunities like this there.

FYI, I applied in PMW because S&T and Investment Banking application for this summer is dead, so it is my only chance to get a summer in a major American IB.

I am thinking about Asia (HK, Shanghai...ect), what is your opinion on it ?

Look, despite brand name is NOT everything, it helps but I will put it to you as bluntly as this, I have to do some interviewing now and it is generally for S&T roles (and our shop is pretty fucking sharp in certain sectors). When I see a CV and I look at the experience/past employment section, I look for positions that are relevant to the role and/or can add value to the team. PWM is neither relevant nor can add value to my trading team, if I see that you have worked at some company in a trading role, whether or not I have heard of the company, I will be interested. If I see you have worked in PWM at some American/European BB then you go straight into the waste paper basket.

PWM is just not relevant to the majority of S&T roles. Pretend you are interviewing for a position on my trading desk, now tell me why you changed to PWM from a trading desk and how you think your experience in PWM will add value to my team.

BTW, don't fucking throw the, "I'm French, in France and don't have a lot of opportunities" bullshit. You are 3 hours max from major financial hubs in Europe. Your surrender monkey attitude attitude didn't work in the War and won't work now, grow a pair and get on with it. Actually, if you interview with some firm in London, remind them that we saved you from the Nazis, you should get an offer on the spot!

Having an American IB brand on your cv isn't worth the move from s&t to pwm. Good luck building your story around that change later on. What are you going to tell s&t interviewers after you say you want to do S&T and they follow up by asking why you went from s&t to pwm? sounds like a pretty dumb decision to me

Thanks a lot guys, for all your comment. You all right ! Totally, agree with you guys. WTH I was thinking about.

I am going to apply for S&T summer program next year.
