The Math/Quant Delusion

I'm in S&T.

Can people who are working comment on this for me please. Do you actually use math on a regular basis? The math I use consists of grabbing a calculator or doing something in Excel. More often than not I just run sheets/models that someone in structuring and the quant team created.

Why do so many kids on this forum harp on and on about having done linear algebra or a triple major in engineering/math/finance etc. when they are applying for IBD or spot FX trading? Who tells people that all of this is necessary? Other misinformed students?

I just feel bad for people who study subjects that they think are marketable rather than ones that they will enjoy, and then end up with slightly lower GPAs and often getting dinged for some econ major from Harvard who took 2 math classes.

the internship I will be doing is for a prop desk and I was told the majority of my work will be programming and mathematical modeling so... It is a quant desk though so I do not know if this answer is applicable.
