Breaking into AM (internship experience preferred?)

Hi All,

I am now based in HK and graduated in 2022 with 1.5-2 years working experience. I will be joining a master school in UK (LBS/Oxford/Cambridge/LSE/ICL) this summer.

I target to land an offer in UK and I am interested in AM (especially for investment analysis role).

I had 1.5 year full time working experience as a corporate banking analyst at BB (focus on liquidity management, cash, trade product, very niche tbh...) and 6 months full time experience in SnT (European bank).

For internship, I had experience in Equity Research (local Asia firm so small firms, both buy-side and sell-side), management consulting (big4), VC (small firm).

I am rebuilding my resume to apply for the 2025 summer analyst and graduate program for Asset Management firm and thinking how I should pick the internship and full time experience in my resume so my experience will look more towards to AM. I know there are many roles in AM (doing research now), but would like to know how those big boss from AM will value those internship experiences.

My thinking now is I should put the full time experience at BB (coz it is weird if I don't put for 1.5 full time experience) and ER experience, and not putting the consulting one. Could anyone please share their views? Highly appreciate!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can strategically tailor your resume for a summer analyst or graduate program in Asset Management, particularly focusing on investment analysis roles:

  1. Highlight Relevant Experience: Definitely include your full-time experience as a corporate banking analyst at a Bulge Bracket bank. Emphasize any analytical skills, client interactions, and financial modeling you did, as these are highly relevant to AM roles.

  2. Showcase Equity Research Internship: Since you have experience in both buy-side and sell-side equity research, make sure to highlight this on your resume. Detail your analytical skills, the types of reports you created, how you contributed to investment decisions, and any specific sectors you covered. This experience is directly applicable to AM and will be highly valued.

  3. Consider Including S&T Experience: While Sales and Trading (S&T) is different from Asset Management, the experience can still be relevant, especially if you can discuss any analytical tasks or market understanding you developed. This could also demonstrate your ability to work in a fast-paced financial environment.

  4. Selective Inclusion of Other Internships: For your consulting and VC internships, include these if you have space and can relate the skills gained to asset management. For instance, any strategic analysis or market research done during your consulting internship could be relevant. However, prioritize the experiences that are most directly related to AM.

  5. Education and Certifications: Since you will be attending a prestigious master's program, make sure to list this prominently. Additionally, if you are pursuing or have completed any relevant certifications like the CFA, mention these as they are highly regarded in the AM industry.

  6. Skills Section: Include a skills section where you can list technical skills such as financial modeling, Excel, and any statistical tools you might be proficient in, as well as soft skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership.

  7. Customize Your Resume for Each Application: Tailor your resume for each firm you apply to by emphasizing the most relevant experiences based on the firm's focus area within asset management.

By structuring your resume in this way, you'll be able to effectively showcase how your past experiences and skills make you a strong candidate for a career in asset management.
