Quantitative Modeling Skills + Energy/Climate
Two questions:
A) Which firms/types of consulting jobs have a strong emphasis on quantitative/coding skills. I am studying CS, Math, and Finance, and would like to work for a firm that values having those skills on the job. Is this exclusively Econ Consulting?
B) Any firms emphasizing work in the energy sectors/climate/climate-tech sector? Are these mostly boutiques or are there opportunities with the MBBs too.
thank you
A) Firms with a strong emphasis on quantitative and coding skills span across various sectors, not exclusively limited to Economic Consulting. With your background in Computer Science (CS), Math, and Finance, you'd be a strong candidate for roles in Quantitative Finance, Data Science, and Financial Modeling within investment banks, hedge funds, and asset management firms. Additionally, technology consulting firms and specialized analytics consulting firms also highly value quantitative and coding skills. These roles often require proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, R, or SQL) and a deep understanding of statistical models and financial theories.
B) Regarding the energy sectors/climate/climate-tech sector, opportunities exist both in boutique firms and within the larger, more established consulting firms, including McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Bain & Company (MBB). These firms often have dedicated practices focusing on sustainability, energy transition, and climate technologies, advising clients on strategy, operations, and technological innovations to mitigate climate change. Additionally, there are boutique consulting firms that specialize exclusively in energy and climate, offering deep expertise and tailored solutions in these areas. The demand for consulting services in energy and climate is growing, reflecting the increasing importance of sustainability and clean energy technologies in global business strategies.
