1) Unless it has changed, you can't graduate from the economics program with a "minor in finance". Econ is in the College of Liberal Arts and Finance is in the McCombs School. They're two totally different colleges within the university and as an econ major you will at most be allowed to take some watered down McCombs courses.

2) Do everything in your power to transfer to McCombs. The career services office and resources are phenomenal. The liberal arts career services office is a joke.

3) Regardless of whether you get into McCombs or not, you should reach out to recent alums who work in equity research and network with them. There are also student clubs that you can join (finance association, investors association) that will help you make these connections.

4) You absolutely have a shot. You need to keep your grades up (>3.5 GPA), network, and land a legitimate internship at some point in your next three years. Once you get a name brand internship the doors really open up.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the help. And thankfully they've made a program where Econ students can minor in Finance and the classes are actually with the Finance students, they've named it the Business Economics program. Nonetheless I'll make transferring to McCombs my ultimate goal. Thanks again.

That's great news if they changed it. You should absolutely push to get into McCombs though. The real power of McCombs is the career services office where all the top firms come to recruit. Ask a friend at McCombs to print out the list of FT job openings and compare that to the listings at the liberal arts career services center. You'll be shocked.

If you are a top student, you will have options coming from UT. It's not quite as easy as coming from the top targets, but it's at least a semi-target. Go with what college experience you want and figure it out from there. You are too young to be worried about the easiest path to IB. UT is a fantastic school.

Yes, if you drive 3 hours north to DFW you will noticed that most individuals in PE and IB come from SMU, UT Austin, T A&M, Baylor, and TCU. Check LinkedIn, there is a good presence in the industry.

initialandrew:

I was in the UT MBA program and I can tell you that all the firms come to campus for us although MBB placement is pretty low compared to the Oliver Wyman/Deloitte/etc. Deloitte especially loves McCombs.

Here 21% of students surveyed go consulting

Thanks. Do you have the ballpark numbers, say, how many UT undergraduate kids get hired by MBB, OW, and Deloitte in a typical year?

I am just trying to research more about Texas schools and how good they are with financial job placement for a relative of mine who lives in Texas.

Should be noted that consulting is a huge catch-all term. The numbers for strategy are lower. Lots of IT consulting in Austin.

Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.
