What’s your reputation at work? VP’s job is to manage up and manage down, I would start asking yourself if he does this to everyone or singles you out. What’s his reputation at the firm? Is he known for this type of insane behaviour or is he singling you out? This isn’t a sustainable relationship to you or your VP and if you’re a good worker then it seems like he’s projecting his own insecurities (not bringing deals in so he’s taking out on you and saying his jr team is lazy etc) so I would either start packing my bags, or trying to find a lateral in your bank.

You hit it head on. This guy is a known abuser of juniors / HR is aware of the issue. People across the floor that have never worked with him know and talk about how he’s the worst VP to work with. My reputation is good, I think. I’ve worked with this guy most of my 9 months here and every time any other senior has tried to staff me he throws a hissy fit. Unfortunately he takes it out on me and purposely bombards me with “live deal” work til 3am so I can’t have the capacity to do anything else. I’m treated like a pawn - territory that is claimed. It’s fucking disgusting. I’m extremely sour on this firm and industry as a result.

I wouldn’t let this one person make or break your experience. Remember, this career is a relationship based industry. Regardless if he’s a twat, be amicable and highly political. If you’re top bucket by the way you mentioned, it seems like he trusts you with his deals. Start taking that away from him and say you’re being staffed with other seniors on more important and high priority items, and he’ll realize that he’ll have to further incentivize his items alongside the other seniors, whether that’s professionally and in this case personally. There’s two ways you can approach, one being avoidant and the other being highly confrontational in a political way. Start replying in the most positive and political way “I wouldn’t trust my work at 3 AM running on 1 hours of sleep and neither should you. I’ll review it in the morning, and flip it to you once I’ve reviewed thoroughly to ensure efficient use of both of our time.” Remember, your reputation is everything. Be the bigger person or avoid the insecure person.
