Investment Banking Berlin

Hi everyone. As we all know Berlin is better known for its Tech scene (VC and startups) than Investment Banking.
Anyways, I was wondering which are the major Investment Banks with offices in Berlin? Do the analysts do any interesting work or are they just supporting the ones that work from Frankfurt / London? Also, how’s the culture compared to Frankfurt for example?
thanks!

There are a few boutiques but the deals are smaller and they are not the most prominent ones. I would guess that the largest branches are GP Bullhound, Carlsquare and Saxenhammer. If you want to go to a more known bank and work on larger deals, you have to go to Frankfurt.

I don't know of any larger banks in Berlin. However, GS is going to establish an office in Munich later this year. The TMT team will move to the Munich office and from my understanding there might be an opportunity for people from other teams to move as well, but not exactly sure of the structure for that. Moreover, there are plenty of PE and VC firms with offices outside of Frankfurt (Munich and Berlin).

When it comes to culture, there are pros and cons. Frankfurt sucks because the city has no vibe and the entire area around the banking district is filled with junkies and homeless people. It's a city where people come to work and that's it. I am yet to meet anyone who thinks that Frankfurt is a nice city (this includes the people who are from Frankfurt). However, as the city is filled with bankers / consultants / lawyers you will have an easy time finding people who work similar hours and have similar interests.

In a place like Berlin / Munich where the concentration of bankers / consultants / lawyers is much lower, you might have a more difficult time finding people with a similar lifestyle. It will be difficult to fit into a friend group of tech guys who all leave at 5pm and have the weekends off when you leave at 2am everyday and have to run from the lunch on Sunday because you got an email. On the other hand, a city like Berlin / Munich has much more of a vibe and a culture than a place like Frankfurt.

If I were to work at a place where I actually had some amount of free time, I would definitely much rather work in Berlin / Munich than Frankfurt.
