Work Experience for Asset Management?
So heres my story. Graduated in December with an undergrad gpa of 3.2, passed CFA®
level 1 in December, will be writing level 2 in June. I live in a small town in Canada (Lethbridge, AB, pop ~80,000) and long term would like to work in Asset Management in the US.
Is there any type of decent experience I can get in a small town that would fare well for AM, or am I better off moving to a real city? I've been looking at doing back office stuff at the local RBC DS office (PWM), which would at least count as CFA®
experience.
I'm thinking after a couple years of that I'll apply to some second-tier MBA programs in the US, network my ass off, then hopefully secure an H1b.
Does this all kind of sound reasonable? Would I be better off moving and trying to find a job more relevant to AM?
Your plan sounds perfectly reasonable.
BUT, my only questions would be: Why are you limiting yourself to your small town? If you want a front office job, why not broaden your search to the bigger cities today rather than a few years from now?
Thanks for the reply John. Main reason I'd like to stay here is that I have a good life, family is all here, and my girlfriend is here going to school. I think it'd be a decent spot to be able to work a fairly stressless job, manage my own portfolio, and still have the energy to prep well for the CFA and GMAT.
Just curious what others thought of that plan, or if anyone else has experience in making a similar transition.
